Historical Preservation Initiatives

We are committed to preserving the rich history and cultural significance of the Dunbar Historic District. Through advocacy, partnerships, and education, we ensure that the legacy of our community remains a cornerstone of inspiration for future generations. Explore our efforts below:

1. Historic Landmarks Advocacy

We actively work to protect and preserve key historical landmarks in the Dunbar Historic District, including:

  • The Florence B. Price Auditorium: Advocating for its rehabilitation and recognition as a cultural treasure.
  • The Bush-Dubisson House: Owned and maintained by the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, which has preserved its historical integrity.
  • The Legacy of Milton Crenshaw: Although his home was demolished, we continue to honor his contributions as a Tuskegee Airman trainer through lectures and community discussions.

2. Educational and Cultural Programming

We host programs and events that promote awareness of our district’s history, such as:

  • Historical Walking Tours: Showcasing the homes and legacies of icons like Scipio A. Jones, Judge Mifflin Gibbs, and Florence B. Price.
  • Community History Nights: Bringing the neighborhood together to learn about our shared past.
  • Youth Engagement: Partnering with local schools to educate the next generation about the district’s significance.

3. Restoration and Rehabilitation Projects

We collaborate with city officials, architects, and community organizations to restore and maintain historic structures, including:

  • Restoring the Florence B. Price Auditorium to its original grandeur.
  • Supporting the preservation of historic homes like the John E. Bush residence, founder of Mosaic Templars.
  • Advocating for culturally sensitive development that aligns with the district’s historical aesthetics.

4. Preservation Partnerships

Our initiatives thrive through collaboration. We proudly partner with:

  • Local Schools and Colleges: Including Philander Smith College and Arkansas Baptist College.
  • Cultural Organizations: Such as the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center.
  • Preservation Experts: Working with WER Architects and others to ensure proper care of historic landmarks.

5. Celebrating Historic Designations

We highlight the importance of national and local recognition of the district’s significance, including:

  • The Dunbar School Neighborhood Historic District designation on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Hosting community events to celebrate new and existing markers, such as the Dr. G. Thornton Home marker unveiling.

6. Future Preservation Goals

Looking forward, we aim to:

  • Secure additional historical markers for underrecognized sites.
  • Develop a Historic Preservation Plan to guide restoration efforts.
  • Advocate for increased funding and grants for preservation projects.
